What Mahomes New Deal Means For Chris Jones

After the full details came out about Patrick Mahomes new 10 year/503 million dollar deal, my thoughts and many others went to how will that affect the rest of the Chiefs roster. Luckily for KC the new contract will not kick in immediately, however starting in 2022 Mahomes is going to take up a huge amount of the Chiefs cap space.

The good news is the Chiefs have Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill, and Mecole Hardman under contract for at least 2 more seasons, but after that Mahomes may have to start working with less and carry more of the load. The only immediate impact this deal has is star defensive lineman Chris Jones who was franchise tagged this offseason but recently has said he will not play unless he gets a long term deal.

The Chiefs would obviously love to keep Jones but with other big deals already in place such as Frank Clarks and Anthony Hitchens, the funds simply aren’t available for KC to pay him. The obvious solution to this will be a trade, the question is how much value can you get for Jones? Some would argue he’s worth a 1st round pick but others would be hesitant to give up so much value. Either way it’s probably best for both parties to strike a trade sooner rather than later and get the inevitable out of the way.
